What is Parent Club?
Vannoy Parent Club extends an open invitation to all Vannoy parents, guardians, teachers, staff, our principal and administrators, as well as, the residents in the Vannoy School attendance area. Our goal is to foster communication and interaction between parents, students, staff, and our Vannoy School community. We seek in our activities to enrich and enhance the learning environment for our children, to educate our parents, to support our principal, teachers and staff of our school, and to be a positive force in the Castro Valley community.
To bring our school community closer together, and to provide fun and healthy activities for our children, we host a number of special social events during the school year, with an emphasis on parents and kids spending quality time together.
Throughout the year we have a variety of guest speakers at our monthly meetings, providing education in such diverse areas as student assessment, parenting skills, health and safety issues, and ability awareness. Our speakers have included the CVUS Superintendent, School Board members, educators, financial advisors, law enforcement officials, and others.
Parent Club helps organize volunteers to serve as room parents, science helpers, computer aides, music and art docents, and library assistants. Parents’ also work in our classrooms, and help with our school garden, disaster preparedness, campus beautification, health and safety, and physical education. We try at all times to be responsive to the needs of our school.
Funds raised by Parent Club through our ongoing SCRIP sales and various fund-raisers have provided instructional materials and supplies, library books, computers and software, campus improvements, and special experiences for our students, such as field trips, assemblies, character education, Music for Minors, and Art. Parents, students, teachers, and staff all work together to identify our funding needs, and to design fundraising activities that promote our sense of community spirit, as well as our financial goals.
Membership in the Vannoy Parent Club is open to all parents or guardians of Vannoy students, the teachers, administrators, and staff of Vannoy School, as well as, any other residents of the Vannoy School attendance area. Parent Club currently provides an average of $110 in supplies and experiences for each student. We request a $35.00 membership fee per child for the school year. Meetings are held in the Science room, Room 1. Free childcare is provided in Room 2. Please see our Vannoy Calendar for meeting dates, which are generally the first Tuesday of the month.

How can I help?
There are many different opportunities to volunteer at Vannoy. We see our parents and other community members as a valuable resource for our children, with many talents, experiences, interests, and ideas that can greatly benefit our school. You may want to volunteer on a regular basis, or on a specific project or event. Perhaps you can provide a service from your home or business. Listed below are some of our ongoing needs. Many other projects and activities will come up during the school year. For more information, come to the monthly meetings of the Vannoy Parent CLub, or call our voice mail system, the 24-hour Parent Club Hotline, at 537-3335, ext. 1673.
ROOM MOM OR
DAD: The room moms and dads are the primary communication
link between teachers, parents, and Parent Club. Parents plan
classroom parties, coordinate recruiting efforts at the classroom
level, and generally help out when needs arise.
LIBRARY ASSISTANT: These parents work directly with classes and individual students
in selecting and checking out books during weekly library visits.
Volunteers may also read stories, tech library skills, and spend
time organizing library materials.
SCIENCE HELPER: Parent volunteers help the classroom teachers in implementing
our outstanding science program. Through the use of stimulating,
hands-on experiments, and other practical applications, our volunteers
teach our students about the exciting possibilities of science.
ART DOCENT: Our F.A.M.E. program brings parents into the classroom to share
the history and practice of art and music with students at all
grade levels. We present both enrichment material and lessons
that are fully integrated with the classroom curriculum.
FOR MINORS II: Trained docents bring music to the
classroom, grades K through 3, 30 minutes per week throughout
the school year. The program is curriculum based, and docents
work closely with the classroom teachers. Music for Minors II
is a program administered by a non-profit volunteer organization
committed to making music an integral part of every child’s
education. Parent volunteers are professionally trained as docents.
Their goal is to nurture a love of music in all children through
their participation in a variety of musical experiences involving
singing, rhythm activities, dance, playing simple rhythm instruments,
and music appreciation. Funding is needed for docent training
and classroom sponsorship.
AUTOMATION: We're very excited about the progress we've
made on our library automation project! When complete, automation
will simplify book check-out, give us greater control over our
collection, and eventually give our students access to school
libraries across Castro Valley. Volunteers are needed to place
bar codes on all of our library books and enter data for each
book into the computer system, as well as other tasks. If you
would like to help out with this important update of the Vannoy
Library, please contact our school librarian.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Parent volunteers are often needed to help the classroom teachers
develop and implement physical education programs, supporting
and supplementing the work of the school P.E. specialist. Instruction
in specialized areas, such as dance, is particularly appreciated.
PEP VOLUNTEER: The Parent Educator Program (PEP) is a crucial intervention
program administered to the 3rd and 4th grades at Vannoy. The
emphasis is on building self-esteem and teaching refusal skills,
with a specific focus on tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Volunteers,
who work in teams of two, are given complete training before beginning
COMPUTER AIDE: Interested volunteers work with small groups of children in the
classroom, providing support and supervision during lessons and
projects developed either by the classroom teacher or our school
computer instructor. Due to our school's recent rapid growth in
the area of technology, this is one of our greatest needs. No
special computer skills are necessary.
CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER: Parents can help in the classroom in a variety of ways beyond
those already listed above. Individual classroom teachers have
different needs, ranging from making copies and grading papers
to driving on field trips and working directly with small groups
of students on skills. Please ask your child's teacher what you
GARDEN: The Vannoy School Garden affords students the
opportunity to learn about horticulture first hand. Each classroom
has a raised bed plot where they grow fruit, vegetables and other
plants. Produce is then sold at school where children learn valuable
lessons of weights and measures, in addition to retail and match
skills. If you like to work outside, and you don't mind getting
dirty, please join us in the Vannoy garden.
OFFICE HELPER: At times our school office staff may need help with word processing, copying, distribution, answering phones, or a variety of special
projects. One ongoing need is for volunteers to assist in getting
out our biweekly school newsletter, the Vannoy Cougar Trails.
If you would like to help out in any way, please contact our school
secretary, Mrs. Heuer.
We have needs in other
areas as well. We always need volunteers to plan and administer
our fund-raining and social events, and to server on various Parent
Club committees. We need lots of helpers for our most special
event of the school year, the fun and fabulous Courgarthon Walkathon!
We need your energy and your elbow grease on our Campus Clean-up
Days, and with our site improvement projects. In short, let us
know that you want to help, and we'll find you a job! Remember,
we couldn't do it without you. Thank you for your support!

Vannoy Endowment Programs
Many of the exciting
educational programs at Vannoy School would not be possible without
generous donations from parents and community members. Most often
these donations are given to the general fund of the Vannoy Parent
Club, but you may like to contribute to a particular program or
area. The Vannoy Endowment Program has been developed to facilitate
contributions that are designated for a specific purpose, and
that purpose only. Please take a few minutes to read this sheet
and become familiar with the programs that you can support during
the upcoming school year.
CLASSROOMS: These classrooms are places where the use
of technology is both planned and spontaneous. Improvement of
student learning is the primary reason for this technology focus.
Computers with appropriate software and video equipment is accessible
tools to assist students and teachers in this environment. Funding
from private donations and support from the Parent Club will continue
to expand the technology to additional classrooms and grade levels.
Donations to this program also support computer networking and
access to the Internet.
GARDEN: The Vannoy Garden project is well under way.
Every classroom has a raised bed for its own use. Activities in
the garden are integrated with the classroom curriculum and provide
opportunities for a variety of learning experiences, from science
experiments and mathematical calculations to creative writing
and living history. Students also learn about personal responsibility
by caring for their classroom planting bed. Ongoing funding is
needed for supplies, tools and maintenance.
FINE ARTS PROGRAMS: The fine arts programs at Vannoy strive to keep the arts
alive for all our children in the face of dwindling financial
resources. Our primary program is F.A.M.E., a program that brings
parents into the classroom to share the history and practice of
art and music with students at all grade levels. The lively lessons
always conclude with a fun activity or art project. This program
gets rave reviews from students and teachers alike. Parent volunteers
present both enrichment material and lessons that are integrated
with the curriculum. Other activities in the arts include professional
performance assemblies and student peer performances. Support
is needed for all these programs.
MUSIC FOR MINORS
II: Music for
Minors II is a program administered by a non-profit volunteer
organization committed to making music an integral part of every
child’s education. Parent volunteers are professionally
trained as docents, and teach music in the classroom on a weekly
basis. Their goal is to nurture a love of music in all children
through their participation in a variety of musical experiences
involving singing, rhythm activities, dance, playing simple rhythm
instruments, and music appreciation. Funding is needed for docent
training and classroom sponsorship.
RENEWAL: Vannoy School has a 12,000 volume, fully automated
library that serves students, faculty and parents. Our collection
of library materials supports the curriculum and also offers books
for recreational reading. The automated system includes a computer
database with extensive search capabilities in the library and
enables them to more efficiently utilize this valuable resource.
Over 1,500 books are circulated monthly! State funding has been
cut out! Our school community considers the library an essential
resource for daily student learning and the kids love using the
library. Therefore there is an ongoing commitment by Vannoy families
to this facility and collection. In an effort to prepare our students
to meet specific learning objectives and also spark their interest
in learning, donations are needed to purchase current material
and to renew our books as they wear and get torn over use.
CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM: Vannoy has multiple
areas around the school to be upgraded or maintained. Donations
are welcome to support improvements and maintenance to our campus
and playgrounds. We welcome your suggestions and ideas too!
HANDS-ON-SCIENCE: Vannoy School has an outstanding Science Program that is centered on the FOSS science kits. Cooperative learning, thematic instruction,
and integration with other curricular areas are important facets
of the program. The curriculum is both balanced and comprehensive,
including lessons from the earth, life, and physical sciences,
and learning is activity-based, allowing students to evaluate
data, develop hypotheses, and apply scientific knowledge to everyday
life. A parent science assistance program is utilized at all grade
levels. Science at Vannoy is exciting, accessible, fun and always
hands-on. Funding is needed for scientific apparatus, consumable
supplies, and other instructional materials
PROGRAM: The Parent Educator Program is a crucial intervention
program administered to the 3rd and 4th grade students at Vannoy
School. The emphasis is on building self-esteem and teaching refusal
skills, with a specific focus on drugs, tobacco, and alcohol.
Funding is needed to provide training for the parent volunteers
who present the curriculum and instructional materials.
SPORTS PORGRAM: Students in the 4th and 5th grades at
Vannoy and other Castro Valley elementary schools participate
in the Elementary Sports Program, and after-school intramural
track and volleyball program for boys and girls. The different
schools meet in friendly competition, with an emphasis on physical
fitness and good sportsmanship. The sports program is open to
all students, at no cost to the participants. The school district
provides funding for coaches’ salaries, but additional support
is needed for sports equipment, team uniforms and participation
